The History:
In days gone by some 30+ plus years ago, we remember the numerous coveys of wild Bobwhite Quail and the occasional ruffed grouse that inhabited South Jersey and the vast and beautiful NJ Pine Barrens.
Fast forward to today and Mr. Bob and the Ruffed Grouse are gone. For Ruffed Grouse in NJ, the season is now formally closed. No legal harvest or hunting opportunities exist. Quail are much in the same situation other than on two WMA’s stocked by the State of NJ and on private hunting clubs and preserves. It is no longer legal to stock quail on public land outside of those parameters.
This hunt is an homage to days gone by. Due to the State restrictions, we use Hungarian and Chukar Partridge as our legal quarry. Your hunt will be conducted in select parts of the famed NJ Pine Barrens, many locations miles from the nearest paved road. Your guide has spent his entire life in these woods and waters and will happily carry on a conversation about the changing face of our landscape, hunting opportunities, and general history. As a lifetime outdoorsman from a Baymen family of over a hundred years in NJ, he began his guiding career as a teenager some 40 years ago with big water duck hunts being the norm. Moving from Chesapeake Bay retrievers early in life to Versatile Dogs such as GWP’s and his beloved Lewellyn Setters his love of upland hunting led him throughout this great nation in pursuit of upland game birds in front of a stylish point.
